Below is a list of popular breeds and a little about each one, this is the basic information and will help you decide if the breed is for you.
When you are choosing a dog, whether it is a puppy or a rescue, it is very important to look into the breed itself before making your mind up. Every breed has been bred for a purpose or it would never have been here in the first place. Although many breed now have had a lot of their natural instincts bred out, it is still likely to be there to some extent.
The best idea is to make a list of the dogs you like the look of and then go through your list and research each breed individually and make a decision on what you can cope with and what you are willing to do.
For example, if you want a small dog which is easy to train and good with children, do not seriously consider something like a Whippet. Although they are small and get on ok with children, they are not easy to train and need a lot of exercise and don't play that much.
It is essential that you look at the dogs on your short list, in the flesh and speak to people who own them and get their honest opinion of what they are like.
Often bitches are easier than dogs in many breeds, but this is not always the case, so you need to find this out as well. Do not just push aside a dog which looks like it may need a lot of grooming, when everything else seems perfect, look into exactly how much as something like a Sheltie does have a fairly long coat, but does not need a huge amount of grooming.
Also look into the space you have and amount of exercise you will be willing to give or are able to give the dog. Some breed need a lot more exercise than others.

Original Purpose:- Vermin destroyer
Size:- 9.5 to 11.5"
What are they like:- Lively, friendly, quite independent, can be a little sharp and protective at times, doesn't like strangers.
Ease of training:- Quick to learn, but you need to be consistent.
Coat Care:- Course and wiry coat, so shouldn't easily mat. It is an easy care coat.
Suitable as a pet:- YES, gets on well with children and other pets, doesn't need huge amounts of exercise, but the more the better.
Health:- No known health problems.
Dog or Bitch:- Either
AFGHAN HOUND
Originated: - Afghanistan
Original Purpose:- Hunting large and small game and a watchdog for livestock.
Size:- 24.5" to 29.5"
What are they like:- Very independent, a proud breed, intelligent, cautious with strangers, will chase anything, can also be dominant and highly strung. They look glamorous, but are not easy dogs.
Ease of training:- Not easy to train, they are a typical hound and they will respond badly to aggressive training methods. You can not bully an Afghan!
Coat Care:- Long silky flowing coat which needs an awful lot of care and attention. It will mat quickly and definitely needs a thorough comb through every day. If you don't like grooming, don't by an Afghan!
Suitable as a pet:- No, definitely not a dog for the novice, cannot be allowed to run free, except in a very secure place. They have also been known to be difficult with other dogs!
Health:- Cateracts, hyperthyroidism and can be sensitive to anaesthetics.
Dog or Bitch:- Bitch is likely to be less difficult, but neither are easy.
AIREDALE TERRIER
Originated: - England
Original Purpose:- Hunting otters and other game and also a guard dog.
Size:- 22" to 24"
What are they like:- Stubborn, tough, watchful and can also be dominant.
Ease of training:- Will train very well in the right hands, needs an experienced owner to bring out the best in him, but does enjoy learning if trained in a fun but firm way.
Coat Care:- Harsh and wiry coat which needs little attention, but will need clipping/stripping about twice a year.
Suitable as a pet:- Yes with the right owner, but they can be difficult and will not back down to a challenge from another dog.
Health:- Hip Dysplasia with an average score of 17. Ideally neither parents should have a higher score than the average.
Dog or Bitch:- Bitches are easier to handle than the dogs in most cases.
AKITA
Originated: - Japan
Original Purpose:- Fighting and hunting wild boar and bear.
Size:- 24" to 26.5"
What are they like:- Very aloof, intelligent, extremely strong willed, can be very dominant and will not be bullied. Do not expect to force an Akita to do anything, you will usually lose!
Ease of training:- Not easy, but will respond to the right handling. It is never advisable to challenge and Akita!
Coat Care:- Thick dense coat which will need thorough grooming when moulting, otherwise fairly easy to care for.
Suitable as a pet:- Definately Not, this is not for the novice, these dogs can be extremely difficult and have incredible strength. They are often aggressive with other dogs, can be very dominant and have a very strong hunting instinct. Do not just look at the cute face and handsome body and think this dog is for you, look much deeper and be prepared for a lot of hard work!
Health:- Auto-immune disease and eye problems. Hip dysplasia with an average score of 11, ideally neither parents should have a score higher than the average.
Dog or Bitch:- Bitches are slightly easier, but both can be difficult.
ALASKAN MALAMUTE
Originated: - Alaska
Original Purpose:- Sled dogs
Size:- 22.5" to 25.5"
What are they like:- Affectionate and loyal, they can be dominant and need a firm and confident owner. Very friendly to everyone, but they are very strong. Needs plenty of socialising as a puppy.
Ease of training:- Will train well in the right hands.
Coat Care:- Very thick coat, but doesn't need a lot of grooming except when moulting. Will need a regular good comb through.
Suitable as a pet:- Not really, too large, too strong and need too much exercise. These dogs cannot be allowed to run free, except in a very secure area, as you are likely to lose them. Malamutes were bred to run, they will not cope with just a walk round the block!
Health:- Hip Dysplasia with an average score of 13, ideally neither parents should have a higher score than the average.
Dog or Bitch:- Not much difference, bitches may be a little easier.
AMERICAN COCKER SPANIEL
Originated: - USA
Original Purpose:- Gundog
Size:- 14" to 15"
What are they like:- Lovable and playful, can be a little sensitive and cheeky and very sociable.
Ease of training:- Fairly easy, needs gentle handling, but can be a little stubborn at times.
Coat Care:- Needs a lot of grooming on the ears and feathering to keep them free from mats.
Suitable as a pet:- Yes, they are very sociable and friendly most of the time.
Health:- Ear problems, eye problems, skin problems, luxating patella (dislocating knee) and auto-immune disease.
Dog or Bitch:- Either
AUSTRALIAN CATTLE DOG
Originated: - Australia
Original Purpose:- Cattle driving
Size:- 17" to 20"
What are they like:- Intelligent, very strong for their size, loyal, brave and alert.
Ease of training:- Eager to learn, therefore he needs a job to do. He is great for obedience and agility etc, this will occupy his brain. They get bored easily and could become a problem if constantly looking for something to do, as they will find their own amusement!
Coat Care:- Weather resistant tough coat, which needs little special care.
Suitable as a pet:- Yes, if kept occupied. They need lots of exercise and remember they are very strong. They need lots of socialising when young, to avoid problems later on.
Health:- Deafness, eye and skin problems.
Dog or Bitch:- Either in the right hands.
AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD DOG
Originated: - USA
Original Purpose:- Sheepdog
Size:- 17.5" to 22.5"
What are they like:- Intelligent, very eager to learn, bonds closely with his owners, very active dog, needs to be occupied and does get bored easily. If bored he is likely to develop behaviour problems! Needs lots of socialising when young and can be shy with strangers.
Ease of training:- Easy to train, but needs lots of Ease of training to keep his mind occupied. He is ideal for obedience and agility etc, as this will keep him busy.
Coat Care:- Medium length coat which needs regular brushing, but does not need special care.
Suitable as a pet:- Yes, BUT only with an active family who will use his brain and give him a job to do. If this is not done, you could easily end up with behaviour problems! They are not particularly noisy dogs.
Health:- Hip Dysplasia with average score of 10, neither parents should ideally have a score higher than the average. Eye problems.
Dog or Bitch:- Either, in the right hands.
Originated: - Africa
Original Purpose:- Hunting Dog
Size:- 15.5" to 17"
What are they like:- Independent, likes company, forms a very strong bond with his owners. These dogs do not bark, they yodel instead. Basenji's cannot cope with draughts and cold and they hate the rain! They can also be very protective.
Ease of training:- Not easy! They are very stubborn and very strong willed. You need to be clever to outwit a Basenji! A Basenji is very unlikely to become an obedience dog, so don't expect miracles!
Coat Care:- Short coat, needs the occasional brush over with a soft brush or hound glove. Basenji's are known to clean themselves like a cat.
Suitable as a pet:- Not really a novice dog, would be ok in the right hands because they like their own space and this should not be invaded. Children MUST learn not to annoy them and care must be taken with their very strong protective instinct! You MUST socialise your Basenji puppy well from very young, or you could have problems later on. Can be difficult with other dogs!
Health:- Some kidney problems.
Dog or Bitch:- Either in the right hands.
BASSET GRIFFON VENDEEN (GRAND)
Originated: - France
Original Purpose:- Hunting hare and deer in packs.
Size:- 15" to 16.5"
What are they like:- Lively, sociable, very loving, a bit sensitive but also stubborn. They do know their own mind, as many hounds do. They have a great nose and this will take their attention, so be careful not to lose him!
Ease of training:- As easy as can be expected from a typical hound! Although they are very clever, they are also stubborn.
Coat Care:- Rough coated and they always look scruffy. Needs regular grooming.
Suitable as a pet:- Yes, but needs plenty of exercise, lovely family dogs.
Health:- Some epilepsy
Dog or Bitch:- Either, both are lovely.
BASSET GRIFFON VENDEEN (PETITE)
Originated: - France
Original Purpose:- Hunting rabbits in packs.
Size:- 13.5" to 15"
What are they like:- Lively, sociable, very loving, a bit sensitive but also stubborn. They do know their own mind, as many hounds do. They have a great nose and this will take their attention, so again be careful not to lose him!
Ease of training:- As easy as can be expected from a typical hound! Although they are very clever, they are also stubborn.
Coat Care:- Rough coated and they always look scruffy. Needs regular grooming.
Suitable as a pet:- Yes, but needs plenty of exercise, lovely family dogs.
Health:- Some epilepsy
Dog or Bitch:- Either, both are lovely.
BASSET HOUND
Originated: - England
Original Purpose:- Hunting
Size:- 13" to 15" (very heavy for their height)
What are they like:- Stubborn, loving, sociable, they are great fun and cheeky dogs who are friendly to almost anyone. They do enjoy company and won't like being left alone for long periods.
Ease of training:- Typically stubborn hound, kind and patient training will pay off, but don't expect too much.
Coat Care:- Short coat needs little grooming, BUT you MUST keep the folds of skin clean to avoid infection.
Suitable as a pet:- Yes, great with children. These dogs are prone to get fat, so watch the food! Care must also be taken to ensure they get the right nutrition while growing, because they grow very heavy, very quickly!
Health:- Eye problems, elbow dysplasia, cancer and back problems.
Dog or Bitch:- Dogs can be more stubborn, but both are usually lovely.
BEAGLE
Originated: - England
Original Purpose:- Hunting in packs
Size:- 13" to 16.5"
What are they like:- Lively and sociable, brave, friendly and clever, but again can be stubborn. They know what they want and will stick to it!
Ease of training:- Typical hound, tends to follow his nose so don't expect too much. They have a very strong hunting instinct and can be very independent.
Coat Care:- Short coat needs little care.
Suitable as a pet:- Yes, they do need plenty of exercise and be aware you may lose him when off the lead if he finds a trail to follow!
Health:- Eye problems
Dog or Bitch:- Either.
BEARDED COLLIE
Originated: - Scotland
Original Purpose:- Herding and droving sheep and cattle. Bred to work on their own and use their initiative! They have been bred to bark!
Size:- 20" to 22"
What are they like:- Very noisy, very clever, quick to learn, cheeky, very loving and bonds well with the family and often one person in particular. Very independent and always knows best! Loves company and hates being left out of things, they need lots of socialising when young or you are likely to have problems later on.
Ease of training:- Easy IF you go about it the right way. They will NOT be bullied and like to make their own decisions. They dislike being told what to do, you should ask a beardie and not tell one what to do! Must be occupied and have a job or you are very likely to have behaviour problems, they are ideal for obedience and agility etc.
Coat Care:- Long coat, needs a lot of grooming. Daily brushing is ideal, but a weekly thorough comb is essential to stop mats. Be prepared to spend at least 1.5 hours doing this every week!
Suitable as a pet:- Only for an active household without very young children. Beardies are very boisterous and bouncy and will knock small children over! Be aware that dogs bred from working stock are completely different to the beardie we all know and love, they are VERY hard work and definitely NOT for the novice owner!
Health:- Hip Dysplasia average score of 11, neither parents should ideally have a higher score than the average. Eye problems and allergies.
Dog or Bitch:- Bitches tend to be more excitable.
BEDLINGTON TERRIER
Originated: - England
Original Purpose:- Vermin destroyer and hunting hare and foxes.
Size:- 15.5 to 17.5"
What are they like:- Brave, playful, loving and bonds closely with their owners. Can be aggressive with other dogs when challenged, don't be fooled by the cute looks!
Ease of training:- Quick to learn, but can be stubborn at times.
Coat Care:- Short and curly, needs regular grooming and will need the occasional trim. Bedlingtons do not moult, so are ideal for owners with allergies.
Suitable as a pet:- Yes, they love to play, just be aware of their ability to be a fearless fighter if challenged!
Health:- Eye problems, liver problems, copper toxicosis.
Dog or Bitch:- Bitches may be easier.
BELGIAN SHEPHERD DOG (GROENENDAEL)
Originated: - Belgium
Original Purpose:- Herding
Size:- 22" to 26"
What are they like:- Energetic, alert with a need to work. Can be shy with strangers, so needs lots of socialising when young. They bond closely with one person.
Ease of training:- They learn quickly and need a gentle but firm hand, they do not do well with aggressive training methods! You are likely to see adverse reactions to rough handling! Groen's are ideal for obedience and agility etc if trained in the correct way.
Coat Care:- Double coat which needs a fair bit of care, especially while moulting. A good groom once a week is normally all this dog needs.
Suitable as a pet:- Yes, IF properly socialised, reared and handled. Not really a novice dog and needs plenty of exercise and a job to do!
Health:- Eye problems, Hip Dysplasia with average score of 11, neither parents should ideally have a higher score than the average. Epilepsy is also known.
Dog or Bitch:- Bitches may be easier.
BELGIAN SHEPHERD DOG (TERVUEREN)
Originated: - Belgium
Original Purpose:- Herding
Size:- 22" to 26"
What are they like:- Energetic, alert with a need to work. Can be shy with strangers, so needs lots of socialising when young. They bond closely with one person.
Ease of training:- They learn quickly and need a gentle but firm hand, they do not do well with aggressive training methods! You are likely to see adverse reactions to rough handling! Terv's are ideal for obedience and agility etc if trained in the correct way.
Coat Care:- Double coat which needs a fair amount of care, especially while moulting. A good groom once a week is normally all this dog needs.
Suitable as a pet:- Yes, IF properly socialised, reared and handled. Not really a novice dog and needs plenty of exercise and a job to do!
Health:- Eye problems, Hip Dysplasia with average score of 11, neither parents should ideally have a higher score than the average. Epilepsy is also known.
Dog or Bitch:- Bitches may be easier.
BELGIAN SHEPHERD DOG (LACKENOIS)
Originated: - Belgium
Original Purpose:- Cattle driving and guard dog
Size:- 22" to 26"
What are they like:- Tough and brave, but likes to learn. They are a good guarder, but can be dominant with both dogs and people. Needs lots of socialising when young.
Ease of training:- Needs to work and needs firm and confident handling
Coat Care:- Rough coated, would probably benefit from a trim every now and then, thorough grooming is essential.
Suitable as a pet:- Only if given plenty of exercise, lots to do and with a confident and experienced owner.
Health:- Hip Dysplasia with average score of 11, neither parents should ideally have a higher score than the average. Some epilepsy and some have a reaction to vaccinations and anaesthetics!
Dog or Bitch:- Dogs can be more dominant, neither are easy.
BELGIAN SHEPHERD DOG (MALINOIS)
Originated: - Belgium
Original Purpose:- Cattle driving and guarding
Size:- 22 to 26"
What are they like:- Brave, tough, intelligent, excellant guarding ability, very keen to work and bonds closely with his owner. They can be dominant and difficult and they need a lot of socialising while young.
Ease of training:- Quick to learn, but does need a confident and experienced owner.
Coat Care:- Short coat, needs little attention except when moulting and then a thorough grooming is required.
Suitable as a pet:- Only in experienced hands, can sometimes be aggressive and needs a lot of exercise.
Health:- Hip Dysplasia with an average score 11, neither parents should ideally have a higher score than the average, eye problems and can have reactions to vaccinations and aneasthetic.
Dog or Bitch:- Dogs may be more dominant.
BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOG
Originated: - Switzerland
Original Purpose:- Cattle driving, tracking, watch dog and pulling carts.
Size:- 22.5 to 27.5"
What are they like:- Friendly, sociable, intelligent, can be stubborn and loves children and the family, but will be protective if required.
Ease of training:- Learns quickly with the right handling, this should be gentle and encouraging, but firm if necessary and he will be very responsive.
Coat Care:- Medium length coat, needs a good brush once a week and the feathers combed through.
Suitable as a pet:- Yes, if you have enough space to accommodate him.
Health:- Hip Dysplasia with an average score of 16, neither parents should ideally have a higher score than the average, elbow dysplasia, heart problems and bloat. These do not have a long life expectancy!
Dog or Bitch:- Either, but bitches may be easier.
BICHON FRISE
Originated: - France and Belgium
Original Purpose:- Companion and circus dogs
Size:- Approx. 11.5"
What are they like:- Lively, happy, playful, very sociable, intelligent and cheeky.
Ease of training:- Easy to train, loves learning tricks and showing off.
Coat Care:- Needs very thorough grooming every day and will also need regular trimming. Bichon's do not moult, so are ideal for owners with allergies.
Suitable as a pet:- Yes, loves everyone and is a great dog for all the family. Ideal first dog or pet for the older child if you can cope with the coat, but you can always have them clipped off!
Health:- Eye problems, luxating patella and teeth/gum problems.
Dog or Bitch:- Either, both are easy, bitches may be easier to house train!
BORDER COLLIE
Originated: - England
Original Purpose:- Sheep herding
Size:- 20.5 to 21.5"
What are they like:- Very keen to work, they must be occupied and are great for obedience and agility. Quick learners, may herd and nip children if not kept amused, can be excitable and very obsessive.
Ease of training:- Needs firm, but gentle handling and they will learn both good and bad things very quickly. They need lots of socialising while young to avoid problems later on.
Coat Care:- Medium length coat, some are short coated, but neither need excessive grooming.
Suitable as a pet:- No, unless you are prepared to occupy them both mentally and physically and they have a very strong herding instinct. Working bred dogs can often be very difficult and sometimes snappy with other dogs and people.
Health:- Hip Dysplasia with an average score of 14, neither parents should ideally have a higher score than the average, eye problems, some deafness and allergies.
Dog or Bitch:- Both can be difficult in the wrong hands!
BORDER TERRIER
Originated: - England
Original Purpose:- Hunting
Size:- Approx 13.5"
What are they like:- Brave, stubborn, active and will get on well with the whole family.
Ease of training:- Fairly easy, quick to learn and will enjoy agility.
Coat Care:- Thick, course coat which will probably need hand stripping a couple of times a year and a good brush once a week.
Suitable as a pet:- Yes, but can sometimes be difficult with other dogs.
Health:- Eye problems and some heart problems.
Dog or Bitch:- Dogs can sometimes be dominant with other dogs.
BOXER
Originated: - Germany
Original Purpose:- Bull baiting, guarding, hunting and protection.
Size:- 21 to 25"
What are they like:- Very lovely, fun loving and boisterous dogs. They need lots of exercise, very intelligent and can be protective!
Ease of training:- Will train well if you are patient and fair with them. Boxers are slow to mature and need time to calm down.
Coat Care:- Short, easy care coat.
Suitable as a pet:- Yes, in an active household with older children. Boxers are likely to knock small children over with their bouncy behaviour.
Health:- Hip Dysplasia with an average score of 16, neither parents should ideally have a higher score than the average, serious heart problems, cancer and eye problems.
Dog or Bitch:- Dogs can be dominant and much stronger than the bitches.
BRIARD
Originated: - France
Original Purpose:- Herding and guarding.
Size:- 22 to 26.5"
What are they like:- Intelligent, brave, can be difficult and temperamental. Some can also be dominant and need an experienced owner.
Ease of training:- In the right hands they will learn quickly and train well, but you really need to know what you are doing.
Coat Care:- Long coat which needs a thorough groom once a week.
Suitable as a pet:- Not easy, definitely not for the novice. They need plenty of exercise and must be well socialised while young.
Health:- Hip Dysplasia with an average score of 22, neither parents should ideally have a higher score than the average, eye problems, bloat, heart and blood problems.
Dog or Bitch:- Bitches are likely to be easier, but both can be difficult!
BULLDOG
Originated: - England
Original Purpose:- Bull Baiting
Size:- 14"
What are they like:- Happy, gentle, intelligent and affectionate. usually very friendly with everyone, but can be stubborn.
Ease of training:- Not always easy to train, they can be independant and they need sensitive handling and a patient approach.
Coat Care:- Short coat, needs little care, but the folds of skin on the face need regular cleaning.
Suitable as a pet:- Yes, they don't needs loads of exercise but do suffer in the heat! Usually get on well with children because of their gentle nature.
Health:- Breathing problems and most cannot give birth naturally.
Dog or Bitch:- Either.
BULLMASTIFF
Originated: - England
Original Purpose:- Watch dog and guard dog.
Size:- 24 to 27"
What are they like:- Dominant, needs firm but gentle handling, sociable with people they know and protective of the family. They need plenty of socialising when young and are very strong.
Ease of training:- Usually easy if handled properly, training must be consistant.
Coat Care:- Short and fairly easy to care for.
Suitable as a pet:- Most of the time, if you have the space for them, needs an experienced owner to bring them up properly.
Health:- Hip dysplasia with an average score of 29, neither parents should ideally not have a higher score than the average, eye problems, cancer and bloat. Some have back problems.
Dog or Bitch:- Bitches are likely to be easier.
BULL TERRIER
Originated: - England
Original Purpose:- Dog Fighting.
Size:- 22"
What are they like:- Very strong for their size, can be stubborn but also very loving. Sometimes independent, loves children, but they are keen fighters!
Ease of training:- Needs a firm hand and plenty of patience.
Coat Care:- Short, easy to care for coat.
Suitable as a pet:- Only if care is taken with other dogs, they are properly socialised when young and receive plenty of exercise.
Health:- Deafness and heart problems.
Dog or Bitch:- Bitches may be easier.
Originated: - Scotland
Original Purpose:- Vermin destroyer and hunting
Size:- 11 to 12.5"
What are they like:- Intelligent, brave, loves children and playing games.
Ease of training:- Needs a firm hand at times, will take advantage if allowed, but does enjoy training.
Coat Care:- Thick double coat, needs regular grooming and will usually need hand stripping.
Suitable as a pet:- Yes, great family pet, loves people and will be willing to have a try at anything, but can be difficult with other dogs at times. Great dog for older children because they love to play!
Health:- Eye and knee problems
Dog or Bitch:- Bitches may be easier.
CAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIEL
Originated: - England
Original Purpose:- Companion, especially for the ladies.
Size:- 13"
What are they like:- Very loving and intelligent, can be excitable (some colours more than others), can also be a little stubborn at times, but loves everyone and everything!
Ease of training:- Can be excellent, but can equally be stubborn and refuse! They are quick to learn, especially if it benefits them and needs gentle handling.
Coat Care:- Fairly short coat, but has long feathers which will need regular combing.
Suitable as a pet:- Yes, excellent first dog or older childs pet, loves company and enjoys plenty of exercise, but will cope with limited exercise if necessary.
Health:- Hip Dysplasia with an average score of 17, neither parents should ideally have a higher score than the average, serious heart problems and eye problems.
Dog or Bitch:- Either, bitches can sometimes be easier.
CHIHUAHUA (LONG AND SHORT COATED)
Originated: - Mexico
Original Purpose:- Companion
Size:- 6.5 to 8"
What are they like:- Intelligent, very brave and definately not afraid to stand up for themselves if necessary! They can be stubborn and will love their owner and often bond closely with one person.
